Bird Watching with Ben
by:
Ben
Gelman
Southern Illinois' favorite bird watcher and journalist,
Ben Gelman, relates his bird watching experiences. Anyone
interested in the birds of Southern Illinois will enjoy this
classic.
While still a high school student in the Bronx, Ben Gelman was
privileged to go on bird walks with young men who would achieve
fame as ornithologists: Joseph Hickey, Allan Cruikshank, and
Roger Tory Peterson. In 1956 he joined the staff of the Southern
Illinoisan, serving as photographer, reporter, regional editor,
Sunday news editor, and columnist until 1982. He is presently
managing editor for the SIU Courier, a weekly newspaper published
by Southern Illinois University.
